The history of Kamide Kiyama began in 1841 when Kisaburo started a pottery business. Until then, the Kamide family had been farmers. The third generation was born as the second son of Kamide Ishitaro in Tekushimamura, Enuma County, Ishikawa Prefecture, now Sakaedani-cho, Kaga City. At the age of 10, he began learning the techniques of Kutani ware from his uncle Sanjiro. In 1916, he entered the Dohachi Kiln in Kiyomizu, Kyoto, where he gained full-fledged training in pottery. After returning home, he helped his father with his work, and was taught design and pottery by Adachi Tosen, a master craftsman of Kutani, and his assistant Nagata Eiji. He also worked as a painter at the Takamorimasa kiln in Teraino-cho.

After becoming an independent potter, he changed his pen name to Zuizan. He opened a sales channel in Shikoku through a medicine merchant in Toyama, but the business was suspended due to the war. Later, he built a French-style square kiln and held the Kiyama Pottery Exhibition, showcasing his first works made in that kiln. After his Sarasa Komon Decorative Plate was purchased by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, most of the works he exhibited at exhibitions have been purchased by the Imperial Household Agency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These works have been presented to state guests from various countries. At the 10th exhibition, his Komon Bowl Set and Checkered Motif Decorative Plate won the Grand Prize. This brought him instant attention, and the following year he was recommended as a full member of the Japan Kogei Association.
