This sake cup was finished by Nakata Kingyoku, a master of swirl-and-sprout blue grains. This work is made of a carefully turned potter's wheel, with the outside wrapped in vermilion and swirl-and-sprout white grains, and decorated with a floral design.
Tani ware has long been cherished as the pinnacle of colored porcelain, with its rich colors and grand yet delicate compositions, and its outstanding technique is recognized by many people not just as a local craft, but as pottery of the world.
In 1946, Masao Nakata (the first Kingyoku) opened a kiln in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture.
We produced tea utensils for the Crown Prince and Princess when they visited Kanazawa.
In 1983, we produced the lidded tea utensil "Yellow Ground Gold Arabesque" for the Emperor's visit to the prefecture at the National Tree Planting Festival.
In 1985, Nobuyuki Nakata took on the name Kingyoku II.
1988: Grand Prize at the Kutani Ware Craftsmanship Exhibition
1994: Traveled to China's Silk Road for research, and was certified as a traditional craftsman.
1995 Traditional Kutani Ware Technology Award, Ishikawa Prefecture Design Exhibition Governor's Award
1996: Demonstration at Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo and Takashimaya Department Store in Yokohama
1997 International Colored Ceramics Exhibition Selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition
2000: Prime Minister visits Europe, purchases by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
2001 Certified as a regular member of the Japan Crafts Association
In 2008, he held a solo exhibition at the Japan Club of New York in the United States.
In 2010, a large incense burner was donated to Gokokuji Temple.
In 2013, Katsuhiko Nakata took on the name Kingyoku III. Selected for the Traditional Kutani Ware Crafts Exhibition with his "Late Tower" plate with gold leaf and blue grains.
