[Shimaoka Tatsuzo] 1919-2007 (Taisho 8-Heisei 19), age 88, born in Tokyo. Origins: His father was Shimaoka Yonekichi, a braid maker. Graduated from the Ceramics Department of the Tokyo Institute of Technology. After the war, he became an apprentice under Hamada Shoji. In 1954, he built a kiln in Mashiko Town. In 1980, he was awarded the Tochigi Prefecture Order of Cultural Merit. In 1996, he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan (Jomon inlay). In 1999, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Fourth Class, Gold Rays with Rosette. He taught, lectured, and held solo exhibitions all over the world.




*As the red painting says "Kanju" (80 years old), this is a special piece created to commemorate the artist's 80th birthday, which means that this work was created in his later years after he was designated a Living National Treasure. There is a carved inscription of "Ta" inside the base.
