In June 1998, Tokoname ware (teapots) was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property, and Tokoname potter Yamada Jozan III was recognized as a Living National Treasure, a holder of that technique. Yamada Jozan III was born in 1924, and his real name was Minoru. He studied at the Ceramics Department of Aichi Prefectural Tokoname Technical School, the successor to the Pottery School, and studied under his grandfather, the first Yamada Jozan, and his father, the second Yamada Jozan. He has won awards at numerous exhibitions, and took on the name Yamada Jozan III in 1961. He has since won numerous awards at exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, and has also served as chairman of the Tokoname Handmade Teapots Association.
