Born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture in 1972.
His grandfather was the late Tokuro Kato and his father was the late Shigetaka Kato.
In 1990, he entered the Western Painting Department of Nagoya University of Arts.
In 1994, he traveled overland from Xi'an and Dunhuang in China to Urumqi, then to Eastern and Western Europe, staying in Spain for about a year to study languages and art.
After returning to Japan, he started making pottery at Shigetaka Studio.
